The Scarlet Letter

Quote:
"Therefore, as a man who has not thought and philosophized in vain, I seek no vengeance, plot no evil against thee. Between thee and me, the scale hangs fairly balanced. but, Hester, the man lives who has wronged us both! Who is he?"
"ask me not!" replied Hester prynne, looking firmly into his face. "that thou shalt never know!" (pg70)

Explanation:
Everyone desperately wants Hester to tell who the father of her child is but no matter what she continues to refuse. At first it seems as if she was intimidated by the appearance of Roger, then when he asks her about who the father of her child is she immediately shifts in tone and  says that he "shalt never know". Even though he tries to convince her by saying that he does not wish to seek revenge she insists in keeping the identity of her child's father a secret.

questions:
1. why might the authors intent be for making Roger Chillingsworth seem so mysterious?

2.why might Roger Chillingsworth insist in staying undercover; by doing so is h helping hester or will he be making the situation a bit more complicated?

3.What seems to be nathaniel hawthornes purpose for using so many dashes throughtout the third chapter?

  1. my simplest answer that I would give is just for entertainment. with the help of creatinf mystery and suspense the author is able to draw in the reader easier, but my main answer would be to hide the truth aswell, alomst like being in favor of Roger and helping him cover his identity. Maybe Roger insists of staying underccover is for his own protection, this is going to take some real close reading. Thank you for your questions for they have helped me in my reading.

  2. RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS : (Question 1)The authors intent for making Roger Chillingsworth seem so mysterious might be to create suspense. When Hawthorne first introduces roger he does not give his name right away and then hawthorne briefly describes Roger. Yet Hawthorne does not right away reveal his relationship towards Hester and this makes Roger seem mysterious while at the same time creating uncertainty. Therefore making it seem like his intent is to create suspense.

(Question 3): What might seem to be the purpose of the many dashes Hawthorne uses throughout the third chapter might be to add extra information or details. He seems to use the dashes more in the dialogue to add more details of what the characters are doing while speaking. Also to add more side details.

  3. 1)The author's intent for making Roger Chillingsworth seems so mysterious is to create suspense. The author wants the reader to be engaged and involved in the mysterious of the novel. Roger seems to be a mystery in the beginning of the novel and then he is brought upon a person who hides behind a mask because then he notifies Hester to keep his identity as a secret to the unknown. This event positively exhumes mystery in the novel.

  4. The dashes also allow readers to see the contradictions presented about this society and the people therein.
