The Crucible - end of act one

My 1st blog pot was intended for all  of act one................

The girls still continue to hide their secret and for their own sake and for the sake of Reverend Parris. They decide to blame other people in the town of being "witches".

Abigail: "I saw Goody Hawkins with the Devil!"
Betty: "I saw Goody Bibber with the Devil!"
Abigail: "I saw Goody Booth with the Devil!"

The girls begin to act weird and scared and begin to yell out that they saw certain people with the devil. They accuse others of being witches so that the attention will go towards those people instead of them. In a way it shows how much control Abigail has over the other girls and how she would put others in danger just to make sure she is protected and found completely incapable of doing witchcraft.

Level Question: What might the girls have against those specific people that they accused of being with the Devil?

  1. Remember in the play how Abby was talking about how people were putting her name in their mouths but in a bad way? as in people were talking bad about her? maybe these people were being put on the spot as revenge in a way to get back for all the things that people have said about Abby.

  2. Yeah, that's probably why Abigail might do it but why would the other girls blame them?
It irritates me how the girls go along with what Abigail is doing. -__- lol

  3. I don't really see any reason for the girls to have a grudge against the people they accused at the end of Act 1, I just think they were innocent victims used in place of being of accused of witchcraft.
Although Abigail does have a specific grudge against Goody Proctor she's saving that accusation for later on in the story.
