The Crucible- Act Four

Elizabeth is told that her husband, John Proctor will be hung. She then asks to speak with him. John is brought into the room and they are left alone. The discuss whether Proctor should confess or not and at the end he decides that he will indeed make his confession to the judge.
While Proctor was making his confession Mr. Cheever began to write everything he said. It was to be recorded and be posted up for the public to see. After the confession Proctor was asked to sign  his confession but he refused.

Proctor: "How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!" pg133

After Proctor refuses to sign the written confession, the judge doubts if he is telling the truth. He gives this explanation as to why he won't sign. He ends up ripping the written confession and he gets hung.

Level Question:
Do you think that Proctor should have signed the confession?

  1. all john had was his name indeed, it all deals with his sense of pride. He is just like Baba from The Kite Runner. He was already giving up his soul, just let him be with his name left.
